To save a buck
Asia, Thailand — By Kelly on February 20, 2011 2:03 PMWhen I backpacked through SE Asia in 2008, I didn’t always take the cheapest route. I guess you could have called me a “flashpacker” as it was common for me to pay a few extra bucks for added comforts like and air conditioned room.
But times have changed and these days I am always looking to save a buck whenever possible because the more bucks = the longer I can travel.
When I decided to take myself to Koh Samui to attend a 7 day meditation retreat I had the option of flying direct from Bangkok on a one hour flight for $150 or take a bus and a ferry for $20. I decided to take the cheaper option and 20 hours later (4 buses, 2 trucks, and a ferry) I did wonder if the savings had been worth the long and exhausting journey.
I have yet to decide how I will get off this island or where I will go next.
Today I begin a seven day meditation retreat in which I will remain completely silent during this time of devotion to myself.
WHAT? You don’t think I can last seven days without speaking?!
I expect this to be a very challenging but rewarding experience and I am very curious what I might discover as I explore the “inner side” of myself.
What do I really want in life?
Will let you all know when I emerge as a more enlightened Kelly : )

I am so glad that you made it safely! David and I had a similar experience in Las Vegas once. We took the trolley for a couple of dollars instead of taking a taxi. The result was a two hour cramped ride on a city bus with no air to go from one end of the strip to the other. We have decided that in the future we would rather fork out the money! Glad you are having fun and I CAN NOT WAIT to hear about you keeping silent for 7 days!
There is no way you can stay silent for 7 days 😉 What happens when you run out of funds on one of you excursions?
Good Luck Kelly. I can’t wait to hear the Kelly that emerges from her 7 days silence. You rock!
Thanks for your support friend! I really enjoyed the retreat, will write all about my experience soon! X
Good luck! You can do it…maybe 😉
I did it! : )
