Who farted? … Rotorua

You know you have arrived in Rotorua when you breath in the sulphur-rich air. Rotorua is one of New Zealand’s thermal areas with spurting geysers, steaming hot springs and bubbling mud pools. I could hardly stand the smell and got a bad headache the first day!

I went “zorbing” which involved climbing into a large sphere which is partially filled with water and then roll downhill! I did the “zig-zag” course and I honestly don’t think it was worth the money. Not only did the ride last 10 seconds but I sprained my neck when I went airborne and landed on my head! OUCH!

After zorbing I went to the Polonesian Spa, a bathhouse that was opened in 1886 and people swear by the health-giving properties of the water. The complex has several pools at the lake’s edge that range in temperature from 36-43 degrees celsius. I forgot about the warning to remove all silver jewelry before entering and my ring blacked due to the sulfur in the water.

I wandered around Kuirau Park, a volcanic area with a crater lake, pools of bubbling hot mud, and mineral baths. The most recent eruption was in 2003 in which much of the park became covered in mud.

I was more than ready to leave Rotorua and get away from the awful smell! I do not know how people live in that town! I guess the one good thing about it is that you can fart all day long and no one would ever know it was you! 🙂
